Is cost of goods sold a revenue or expense?

I have started getting a bit confused. Where is cost of sales included? Is it revenue or expense?

Cost of goods sold is an expense and it relates to the money spent to buy materials. So in other words, you incur a cost to buy stock. This cost is of course an expense.
