It’s hard to define Goodwill to be honest. I would say that it’s the value that a company has which is not captured by it’s net assets. For example, if you buy a company and you pay $20m and the net assets is $15m, then goodwill should be $5. So it’s basically the difference between the amount that a company pays to acquire another company and the value of the assets that the acquired company has.
