Is accounts receivable always a current asset or can it be both a current and non current asset depending on the customer, the sale made etc?

Yes, 99% accounts receivable is a current asset as it’s expected to be repaid within the following twelve months. It can also be non current asset but in this case and unless it’s specified by some kind of agreement, the accounts receivable might need to be assessed for recoverability.
