Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization is a metric that is used after adjusting for items that are largely connected with judgement such as the depreciation. Most of the times, one off items are excluded since they are not connected with the common operating activities of any company. Extraordinary items are one off items (most of the times) so they need to be excluded. Of course, this is a matter of judgement but it is common practice.
