Why shareholders are important?

Why would you say that shareholders are important? What do they offer and could a company exist without them? Thanks in advance:)

Shareholders are the first to inject funds in a company. No company can be formed without the investors investing capital. The shareholders are the owners of a company and can be also be the management of the company at the same time (especially in small companies).
